Document Summary

We as individuals come together to create structures which have an impact on us. Changes to family, for some, are a cause of great concern. We are going to look at selective trends. From a functionalist perspective, it"s a system that operates for potential benefit. It"s a way of structuring the natural process of sexual reproduction. Sexual regulation, economic cooperation, reproduction, socialization, emotional support. You create normative structures where sexual behaviour can take place in a structured way. Evolutionary psychologists would say there is more of an interest for women to have resources attached to their partner. Man and woman live together, have a socially-approved relationship, and have at least one child. If there"s a problem with this basic unit, that"s a cause for major reflection. Social norms around divorce (maybe because of less-normative thinking and more free thought and feminist movements) changed, and laws changed. If fewer people are getting married, you would expect divorce rates to go down.
