Aristotle and durkheim: social relationships and social structures link to religious relationships and religious structures. If you have a hierarchal structure, chances are that the political/country"s structure will have religions that mimic this structure. Durkheim said society is god; you"re looking at that relationship with society & religion. We tend to view religion through consensus or critique model. Durkheim has a functional bend to his perspective. It is a source of laws/rules, promotes unity, controls decisions, promotes dependency (place to go for help) Religion is a huge form of social control. If you believe you"re being watched, you"ll fall in line. This is seen in those who are heavily watched under surveillance. For example, in the diet used in medieval europe it was staggering how many days you could not eat meat. It got worse and worse and people gave up. If you want to control hunting, you restrict hunting.
