Document Summary
A social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, etc. Development of racial and ethnic labels and identity is a process of negotiation. Racial or ethnic identity vs imposed identity. Belief that a visible characteristic of a group indicates group inferiority and justifies discrimination. Racialization: the process of ascribing ethnic or racial identities to a relationship, social practice, or social group that does not identify itself as such. Prejudice: pre-judging or forming opinions about a certain ethnic or racial group without any knowledge about that ethnic/racial group. Discrimination: unfair treatment of people because of their race or ethnicity. Bigotry: open, conscious expression of racial views. Institutional racism: bias inherent in social institutions, ex. Employer hiring somebody based on which university they attended.
