Norm breaking: not always negative, norm breaking happens quite frequently, positive: bill gates and wife give huge amounts of money to charity, mother teresa. Deviance: deviance is a subset norm violation- enlists a negative reaction, crime and deviance is subject to change, norm violation deviance crime. Sanctions: violation of a norm, sanctions are likely to be mild, because the norm that"s being violation is not overly serious, formal punishment, law breaking, far more serious, more serious the norm the stronger the sanction. In a university there are norms in student behaviour, there is an idea to not talk in class. Also norms about not forging medical notes or no violence on the campus. If someone breaks the norm of not talking in class there is a mild sanction. Not written in the code of conduct that people cannot talk in class.
