Features of socialization: the process by which people learn culture. It is a predicate of culture where you learn femininity and masculinity: gendered sense of self. Socialization of different standards which changes over time: the way we view gender roles in the 1950"s is different from how we view them now. Civilization: where you"re born shapes you as well, whole systems (ancient china) versus discrete (ancient greek) Family: mastering basic skills required for society. Secondary socialization: outside of the family, education, manifest function (intended goal), to teach children academics, latent function (hidden curriculum) Listen to authority: how the world works, merit based, rule based, competition and getting along, teacher expectation. Resocialization: rapid change in people"s values, roles and self-conception, total institutions. Segregation from old status, degradation/disorientation, acceptance of new culture.
