Nuclear family consists of a cohabiting man and women who maintain a socially approved sexual relationship and have at least one child. Functionalist: the increase in drug use, rise in crime, and illegal crime has been traced down to single parent households. Functionalism and the nuclear ideal functional theory. For any society to survive its members must cooperate economically. They must have babies and must raise offspring in an emotionally supportive environment. Since 1940"s functionalists have argued that the nuclear family is best suited to meet these challenges. Nuclear families provide a basis for 5 main functions: regulated sexual activity, economic cooperation, reproduction, socialization, emotional support.
