William james (1902) said that religion provides us meaning and purpose to the world: our religious beliefs are related to the society that we live in (it is structured by society) As a result, religion governs an ever-smaller part of most people"s lives and has become largely a matter of personal choice. Sects are less integrated into society and less bureaucratized than churches. Religiosity mainstream culture and society: the degree to which religion is important to people. Education: education, not religion, dominates socialization outside the family in most rich countries, education is a central determinant of opportunities for upward mobility. 4 mechanisms that make the school system reproduce inequality: financial constraint. Many don"t attend university because they feel they can"t afford it: one-parent households. Low-income parents are more likely to experience financial problems that make marriage difficult and contribute to divorce.
