Collective conscience: composed of the profane (the everyday) and the sacred (those things that are related to religion) Sacred: we have totems (objects) and rituals (practices) associated with them. The more we recognize the totems, we are participating in the sacred. Charismatic leaders: religious leaders who claim to be inspired by supernatural powers and whose followers believe them to be so inspired. Routinization of charisma: weber"s term for the transformation of divine enlightenment into a permanent feature of everyday life. Involves turning religious inspiration into a stable institution with defined roles. Interpreters of the divine message (teachers, dues-paying laypeople, and so on. Marx: called religion the opium of the people. People who are really religious don"t see the reality of the world.
