Soc100 lecture 7 interaction: from emotions to institutions. Interconnected organizations are connected to interconnected groups which are connected to interconnected individuals. Social interaction: people communicating with one another. Acting and reacting to each other: building blocks of interaction. We think of it as a psychological response to things that happen to us, but research shows that emotions are actually socially constructed. We are to feel certain ways in certain situations, according to societal rules: emotion labour. Eg. teacher, nurse, flight attendant, sales clerk, most service sector jobs. Example: in order to earn tips, a waiter must make the customers feel good by creating an emotional connection and giving them a good experience. Conflict: who has more control in a conversation, people interact in order to compete for valued resources such as attention, approval, prestige, information, and money, social class dictates how a conversation goes. People of a higher class get more attention in a conversation.
