Document Summary

Stratification: rich vs poor, powerful vs powerless, highly educated vs less educated. Income: money earned over a given period. A welfare state is one where the country collects taxes and uses it to pay for other things. Advantages of wealth: increase well-being, political influence, better health, longer life. Over time, wealth is being concentrated in fewer people who are in the world"s top 1/5. As a result, everyone else misses out on the finite amount of money: how stratification changes over time. Low income cutoff (lico) is the definition we use in canada: if 63% or more of your income goes to buying necessities, then you are considered to be living in poverty. People are poor because they don"t want to work out of laziness. Some people can be working a full time job on minimum wage and be struggling because of child care costs.
