Philosophical origins: epistemology: how do we know what we know, ontology: what is real, common sense vs. social science. Common sense deference to tradition or authority, unsystematic, illogical reasoning. Social science rules govern observations, finding, conclusion, and tactics for observation. Ideology absolute, fixed, closed, avoids tests, blind to evidence. Social science negotiated certainty, open, logical consistency, detached, transcendent, neutral. Hawthorne effect the behavior of a person will change when you begin to observe them they change their behaviors because they know that you are watching them. Example: imagine you injure your ankle, and go to a physiotherapist, and they tell you to walk in a straight line, but you do so perfectly because you know they are watching you. Methodologies: these affect the qualitative and quantitative. Field research: classifying and counting, develop deep, sympathetic understanding of social world, e. g. Gang research in reality, how many gang members actually fill out.
