Chapter 4: from social interactions to social organization. Social interaction- communication among people acting and reacting to one another either face to face or via computer. Feminist sensitive to gender differences in social interaction. People with high status get more laughs (men) vs women who are considered lower status. Social status, norms and roles are three basis of social interaction. Role- expected behaviour, people occupy statuses and perform roles. Norm- generally accepted way of doing things. Class is feeling down, class clown steps up and rises at the occasion and makes class laugh because they are fulfilling their roles. Teacher controls norms and punishes class clown for disturbing class. Emotions are not voluntary, they can be controlled. When people manage emotion they follow cultural script. People know the designated emotional response in cultural standards and try to act upon it accordingly. Emotional management- people obeying feeling rules and trying to act appropriately to situations they are in.
