Document Summary
Chapter overview: this chapter explains how society shapes human sexuality and how sexuality is apart of our daily lives. Sexuality is an important part of how we think about ourselves as well as how others think about us. North american culture treats sex like taboo and many avoid talking about it. Sex: biological referring to the bodily differences between females and males. Sex is determined at conception as a male sperm joins a female ovum. Intersexual people(hermaphrodites) have some combination of males and female genitalia. Transsexual people feel they are one sex although biologically speaking they are the other. For humans, sex is a matter of cultural meaning and personal choice rather than biological programming. Sexual practices vary from one society to the next (kissing, modesty and beauty) The incest taboo, exists in all societies because regulating sex and reproduction is a vital element of social organization. Primary sex characteristics: the genital organs used for reproduction.
