If woman and man both have jobs, man considered failure (middle class) In working class families, both parents had to work. Unions argue that man should have a family wage (enough to support wife and children so they don"t have to work) Married couple not considered family if no kids by definition. 4 functions of the family: reproduction, socialization, economic cooperation, Monolithic bias: having single model as only version doesn"t make sense ex. historically, not many families stayed together (reasons: disease, war, remarry) Too many different variations to parsons model of traditional family. Historically, marriage was a necessity for survival. not the case today. Functionalist perspective looks at the family as if it is cut off from rest of the world. Families can be split up by external circumstances.
