What determines gender?

Social fabrication
Your sex:
Depends on whether you were born with male or female genitals and a
genetic program that released male or female hormones to stimulate
development of your reproductive system
Your gender:
Refers to culturally and socially constructed di#erences between
females and males found in the meanings, beliefs, and practices
associated with femininity and masculinity
Gender Identity
Identi&cation with, or sense of belonging to a particular sex
(biologically, psychologically, socially)
Ambiguity
Gender Ideologies:
Set of ideas about what constitutes appropriate masculine and
feminine roles and behaviours
Heteronormativity:
Holds that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation, and
assumes an alignment between biological sex, gender identity, and
gender roles
