Document Summary
Social mobility is the movement up or down the stratification system. Meritocracy is achievement based on merit (work hard and you"ll get what you deserve). It was the norm to go to school until you were 18 back in the days, but now we consider it a norm, or must have, to have higher education. The labor market is shaped by the degrees available. Some jobs now need degrees that didn"t before, so workers forced to go back to school. Students have different experiences based on their social characteristics, ex being a male or female. A teacher can shape someone"s education through their perspective. The majority of our whole childhood is based on school. There is a persistence of social inequality, as family background matters and it connects to education more than how much effort you put in. Functionalist: schools socialize and promote integration, so students become good future citizens, and schools sort students.
