Deviance: occurs when someone departs from a norm and evokes a negaive reacion from others. Reacion difers depending on which level of norm is violated. When a norm that is a law has been broken, it is a crime. Deviance and crime are not characterisics of individuals or acions. If our norms vary then our deiniion of deviance and crime also varies. It is not a paricular act criminal or deviant but the existence of the norm around it. Used in the west and used by a small percentage of the populaion. What made marijuana illegal; economic reasons and hispanic populaion. A lot of misinformaion in the public and exaggeraing. Moral panic started when it became apparent when youth started smoking marijuana. Now the public is supporing more for the legalizaion of marijuana. The act itself is not what is important but the regulaions that change. Judicial system: law enforcement, more serious and formal.
