Document Summary
Research methodology: formulate question, lit review: what other sociologists have said about the topic you"re interested in, select method: experiment, survey, interview? what method they"re going to use to answer their question, collect data: (ex. Variable: a concept that can take on more than one value\ Independent variable: the presumed cause in a cause and effect relationship. Dependent variable: the presumed effect in a cause and effect relationship. Research looks at whether workplace harassment policy (iv) on rate of workplace harassment (dv) Divorce (iv) can lead to an increase in rate of child crime and deviance (dv) Association/correlation: a relationship between x and y (x doesn"t necessarily cause y) Population: the entire group about which the researcher wants to generalize. Sample: the part of the population of interest that is selected for analysis. Probability sampling: used more with quantitative work- everyone in the population has an equal likelihood of being selected into the sample (random picking).
