Document Summary
Shifts leading to the development of sociology: the growth of science, the industrial revolution and capitalism, urbanization, the rise of states and political revolutions, the shift away from religion, towards science. The 4 major theories: structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism. Two criteria of sociological theory: empirical component (must be able to test the ideas) Ideas must be sociological (keep social life as the main idea) Society: a complex system of parts working together to promote solidarity and stability. How parts of society work together to create a smooth functioning society. Structural functionalists believe that if anything has been around for a long time, it must be doing something good for society, and they try to find the function of it. Social solidarity: refers to the degree to which group members share beliefs and values and the intensity and frequency of their interaction; helps us understand why there are different parts in our society.
