Crime vs. deviance: when the norm that someone has broken is a law, it is a crime. Definitions of deviance and crime vary depending on the context, because norms are different in different places and time periods. Moral panic: widespread fear that deviance will damage society. The negative reactions that come about after a norm is broken. Informal punishment: mild sanction, imposed face to face. Formal punishment: judicial system, penalty for law breaking.
