Document Summary

Going into the elevator and facing the wall instead of the door, acting in a different way. Occurs when someone departs from a norm and evokes a negative reaction from others. Crime vs. deviance: when the norm that someone has broken is a law, it is a crime. Definitions of deviance and crime vary depending on the context, because norms are different in different places and time periods. Moral panic: widespread fear that deviance will damage society. The negative reactions that come about after a norm is broken. Informal punishment: mild sanction, imposed face to face. Formal punishment: judicial system, penalty for law breaking. When someone commits an act, they get given a label, and by being given that label, they become deviant. Crime is a result of a gap between our goals and our means. Conformist= use legitimate needs to achieve our goals (mark cuban)
