Creating Culture
Slide #4 – Building on last week…
• Religion is a good thing because it creates uniformity (brings people together)
• Religious symbol symbolizes all people who are members of that religion
• groups/societies need some kind of symbol to create unity
• role of creators = cultural objects

• HIP HOP
- collective representation b/c emerged as response to Black and Latino people in poor
environment in 1970s facing racism and poverty struggles
- cultural object = meaning in society or representation of culture

- breaking
- b-boying
- ghetto = reclaimed from meaning something negative, proud of where they came from
(used affectionately)
- projects = negative connotations b/c means living in poverty
• challenges classism, racism, etc. = social conscious messages
• hip hop in 80s = violent lyrics vs. politically progressive lyrics in 70s
• now hip hop is misogynistic as a lot of songs include objectification of women or
women-hating lyrics
Slide #7 – Key concepts
• Takes place at the level of “Creation” in diamond
- Micro level (between individuals, interaction day to day with others)
- for example, people live and interact with each other in “ghetto” and “projects” = hip
hop culture (music, graffiti, etc.)
- another example, students falling asleep in class = teacher starts talking louder or more
dramatically
• Goffman = we’re like “performers” in a theatre (act in front of other people vs. when
alone”
- different kinds of behavior depending on who interacting with
- becoming marijuana smoker = interactive process (through socializing with others)
