Soc209 s1 l5: diversity and criminal justice: acknowledging diversity in the criminal justice system matters. For example, everyone at the age of 18 is now an adult (you can vote, you can buy lottery tickets, move out, etc. ). Why 18: under 12, you cannot be charged for a criminal o ence. But the law has to draw the line somewhere: laws however, can be challenged and changed. Gender: you do gender and you create it, interpret it, and construct it throughout society, gender is constructed and malleable v. s. inherent, the societal characteristics made for gender is loosely associated with sex. Because this is around the time of back-to-school and christmas: summary convictions take place, with no legal aid. Drugs: women tend to do more deals than men but of lesser value, in large drug trades, men are the actors. Assault: the rate in women assault has doubled since 1987.
