Lecture Feb.28.2013  About one police officer for every 259 people in Canada, lower ratio than USA, Australia and Great Britain  Costs about 60% of total Criminal Justice system funding o Cost average Canadian about $300/year  Most police work is mundane, not glorified like in TV shows  Police can be viewed as heroic vs. abusers of power  More private security than actual police  Police do not prevent crime o Rarely do they catch people in the act o Patrolling can have an influence, acts as a deterrent o Crime does drop if you increase police presence o Crime is area specific, often gets displaced to another area if you increase policing in one area  Police are trained so you can hold them accountable and perpetuate the hierarchy  Gypsy officers o Officers that move around to differen
