Dark figure of crime: the dark figure of crime is the difference between how much crime occurs and how much crime is reported or discovered by the police (the unknown amount of crime) Self-report surveys: asks people about the crimes they have committed, measure attitudes and prevalence of offending (primary perps being young men) Indicate that many cities are not reported: asks victims about crimes they did not report, canadian urban victimization survey, the general social survey, direct measures, economic loss, physical injury, property damage. Indirect measures: fear of crime and its effects, anxiety, behavioural change.
