Sep 18 - the construction of crime, law and justice. Management and control of crime and criminals. An act or omission that is prohibited by criminal law. Omission - failing to report child abuse, failing to provide necessities of life. We can separate criminal and deviant behaviour. In order to commit a criminal act you have to violate the formal laws. To be convicted of most crimes, a person must have done something criminal and usually must have intended to do it. Accused is aware that action would cause harm. Individual violates a law simply by lacking the appropriate care and attention about something she/he is doing. Ex. reckless driving - in bad weather it may not be intentional but if you hurt someone you can be charged with it. Ex. declaring oneself a prostitute is a status, but communicating for the purposes of prostitution is an illegal act. Offences that be summary of indictable, based on the crown"s decisions.
