SOC219H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Active Listening, Interpersonal Communication, Prison Officer
Document Summary
Policing corporate culture: much like business corporations, police are socialized to adopt a particular way of acting, dressing and interacting with the general public. Socialized and taught how they are supposed to act: corporate culture = the ways in which police services function. Includes norms, values and behavioural components of the job. Thin blue line is that officers will protect each other instead of people. Work your way through about how you do the job. Insular culture than the rest of the general public: gender is an essential component to policing. Women tend to be part of domestic or social work cases. Men are likely to be on patrol, doesn"t mean that women don"t. More masculinized attributes; firearm training, fundamentally dangerous. Gender composition of modern policing: policing remains a male-dominated occupation, women breaking into policing has been faced with resistance. More than 50% of the world"s population is women however only 20% in policing.
