Gender is so ingrained in everything we do that we often take it for granted. We often assume gender is synonymous with our biological sex. However, the way we understand gender and they ways we express gender identities is created and re-created through human interaction. Gender is an essential aspect of social life- as such everyone does gender without even thinking of it. Definitions of gender to our cultural expectations of how men and women are supposed to act. We learn the signs and symbols of gender through the socialization process and go unnoticed until someone deviates. Gender construction begins typically with the biological parts we are born with. Sex categorization becomes gender through the naming, the way we dress and the use of gender markers. Western cultures only have 2 genders (male and female) Social statuses are constructed through teaching, learning, mimicking and enforcement.
