Lecture 10
Case Study
Professor Magboleh’s Study
• 2016-2017
• 2015 Trudeau government
o Released money to anyone interested who proposed a study based on the 25,000
refugees coming into the country
1. Prof. Peng, Milkie and Maghbouleh got together and made a project
proposal
1. They were 1 of 20 research projects that got funded by the
government
• The new comers
o Mothers with their children bringing in trauma with them
o The staff teaching the mothers English did not know how to help the women,
so they went to prof. Maghbouleh
1. A week later, they got the grant money
• Two different groups
o The women from the Dixie center – mothers who were settled in Canada via the
government assisted refugee program/services (GARS) – government
sponsored
o PSR’s - privately sponsored refugees
1. Recruited via social networks/groups – scattered across the region
• ~40 moms – 3-4 months after arriving, and then at month 13 – average number of kids
– 6-8
o Month 13 affects both groups – 1 year of government or private financial
support – at that point, the family should have the language and working skills
to get up on their own feet – from there, they get social assistance
o What other stressors were there?
1. Children – settling them in school, new friends etc.
• Findings
o Deep pain because they lost their home and network – social disruption
o Majority of respondents would cry during the interview process
o Three forms of mothering stressors
▪ 1 Indirectly involving children
1. Crystallization Of Losses Upon Settling
▪ Sense of control, agency or success – all shaken up
because they are moving from one place, to an entirely
different one
▪ What helped them feel better, was knowing that they had
succeeded in their job as a protector for their children
▪ 2 Directly involving children
1. Integrating Kids Into Schools And Communities
▪ A lack of English
▪ Peers who were not as welcoming
1. These issues were found to be solved via the
intervention of others
▪ The children had had bad experiences in the countries
from where they were before
