Document Summary

Week 7 [lecture 5 though] | feb 23rd 2016: first slide: engels on patriarchy: women"s subordination not natural, but a consequence of particular social relations. Largely to do with specific sets of social relations. Monogamous / patriarchal family: in hunting and gathering societies, where there"s no settled agriculture. Gap: when i came back capital vs. labor conflict shapes much of modern society: our mode of existence, ideologies, consumption pattern, life-trajectories, health, etc. Without this dialectic of labour and capital and power, you won"t have capitalism. Environmental limits: capitalism is wonderful but beyond a point, it creates so much waste etc. This changes everything movie and 7up series : we are driven by greed and nihilism. Marx argues with that and says his main wasn"t to have a socialism revolution; it was that humans deserve better. Socialism or barbarism [common ruin of everyone] compared to the lust of power nothing will ever change.
