SOC275H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Raewyn Connell, Hegemonic Masculinity, Masculinity
Document Summary
Society today is founded upon gender differences and inequalities arguing men and women are seen as being different; they think, feel, respond, and love differently. There is a constant competition between men and women to gain dominance however there is also competition between men to obtain the status of hegemonic masculinity and be the ideal form of masculinity. Raewyn connell a sociologist developed a form of masculinity called hegemonic masculinity, which is culturally honoured and dominant being at the top of the gender hierarchy. Like the american dream, hegemonic masculinity is something that all male want to attain however it is not that easy. Mentioned in the gendered society , sociologist ervin goffman describes hegemonic masculinity as a male who is young, married, white, urban, northern, heterosexual, protestant, father, of college education, fully employed, of good complexion, weight, and height (kimmel and holler 2008).
