Document Summary

Historically, formal education was limited by sex and class: upper-class boys and men: began in late 19th century. Education also restricted to certain populations (white men: embedded in colonialism, teaching imperial manhood: british civilization, christian morality, healthy bods. All women excluded based on assumptions that their bodies not meant to be educated (might inflate heads and left w/ tiny bodies) Education is a right we had to fight for. People are still fighting for this right (malala) At first, educated women for their proper sphere and not for employment. Prepping women for work outside the home threatened the status quo: ppl thought working women would feminize men and masculinize women. There were anxieties about co-ed and women"s colleges. Women now constitute majority of students on college campuses. Men outnumber women in elite schools however : social class, rather than gender or race, is more determining factor of this.
