SOC341-CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF WORK Lecture 1: 1/6/14 -study on Muslim women in the workforce felt as though when there were phone interviews, they would be liked, however when they met face to face it was a whole new ball game Important components to race 1) Race is a product of colonization: when European scholars went to different parts of a world and saw subspecies of humans 2) The emergence of race is directly connected to power relations: eurpoeans goal was to gain more land and resources. -this idea that there are different human races wasn’t a neutral idea there was a hierarchy, the idea of being white was at the top and everything else was below that -white is superior in every way ( phy, emo and intell)higher evolution -this helped justify taking over peoples land and resources 3) Racial designation typically implied inferiority 4) The unworthiness attached to race is inhernet -creating an other, you don’t belong, you are less t
