SOC345H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Life Insurance, Brain Death, Futures Exchange
Document Summary
Healy donation, 1800 transplants were performed, 180 died while waiting for a transplant. Organs are best preserved in a living body. This means keeping someone alive artificially which makes the future removal of organs more effective. Many people think this violates the rights of the organ donor. A person is brain dead therefor can"t give permission for their organs to be donated. People are only allowed to receive treatment if it"s in the best interest. Organ donation crosses two social and moral boundaries: organ donation introduces a utilitarian calculation at death. The family has to make a huge important decision based on a cost and analysis decision. It threatens to put a cash value on human life. It renders the human body as a commodity (something that has a price attached to it) problem: many/ all of us see that human life is valuable.
