What does it mean to be autonomous

Attendant care
• Attendant care: a major criterion that allows people with disabilities to live independently and
autonomously
• Review from last week: carework is not only the provision of care to children or older adults, and
there are unique implications to consider in the provision of care to people with disabilities
What does attendant work consist of
• Attendant care work encompasses many different kinds of tasks
o Medical care
o Housework
o Driving
o Bathing
o Toileting
o Dressing
o Meal preparation and feeding
o Shopping
Care relations
• Balance between caring too much and crossing intimacy
• Care relations between people with disabilities and their careworkers can be very complex
• Balancing the needs of the careworker with the needs of the individual
• A careworker has to actively avoid being too caring and crossing boundaries, while
simultaneously caring enough so that they do not come across as cold
• When care work is provided professionally, care workers are viewed as a tool for independent
living

• There is room for exploitation on both sides

• Gives disabled people more autonomy as they can choose whether they want to have sex or not
