Hegemonic masculinity -> thinking of an example is easy (justin trudeau) -> hetero, powerful, good looking etc. > gossip girl characters -> privilege, white, rich, nice body etc. Michelle obama -> embodies hegemonic femininity qualities -> the femininity she has is much more privileged than others who lack resources . The hegemonic femininity that women are supposed to embody is questionable. Patricia hill collins & controlling images of women of color. Controlling images: the stereotypical images that negatively impact minority groups (ex. Muslim women being oppressed, black men as criminals, latinos as drug lords/women as hypersexuality, italians as part of the mob/mafia) Wrote book -> black sexual politics -> talks about different ways that black women face negative stereotypes & how they control their lives in a bad way. Controlling image of black women as nanny"s -> nurturing, selfless, in the service of white families. We don"t often recognize these images as stereotypes because it is so normalized.
