Connection to last lecture: meaning of image produced through complex interaction of producers, texts, viewers, social contexts, visual culture complicates simplistic communication model of producer (encoding) production. Unity rally reading shows how digital photography and media infrastructure shaped how we received news and what news we receive. Interpellation image addresses/constitutes viewing subject: shapes gaze of viewer and in turn shapes them, contexts of structures and institutions affect whole communication process. Institutions often create their own contexts to control structures and reinforce own interests: visual regimes exercise of power in visual field by institution. Looking at how individual political subjects become groups who want their interests to be forwarded by institutions: e. g. national collectives with distinctive identity in unity rally. In pre-modern/feudal era, no real questions about political era because kings and aristocracy- controlled population: modernity and democratization brought question of how people can change politics.
