Document Summary

Dead verbs- are the bane of english teachers. The typical list includes -- is, are, was, were, am, has, have, had, be, been, look, take, to, make, run, ran, go, went, gone, do, did, came, come -- and ingverbs. Do not mean anything on its own. Replace dead verbs with words that mean something. Look out for constructions words: they are, they were, she/he is. Verbs - are action words, most important in a sentence because it signifies chand and meaning to story. Must be- picturesque, generality is boring and description is good. Unoriginal phrase (words grouped together to create meaning) , a substitute for thought . Real problem in writing - interferes with; economy, detail, and voice. Goal of writing is to make things new- do not rely on cliches. Cliches can take form of an entire story ex. We got him by the short and pearlies .
