"was playing" is a gerund (verb form functioning as noun) = inefficient: change to "who played" "ing" endings = excessive: e. g. "she started rolling her eyes, change to "she rolled her eyes" "began to" and "started to" are wordy: specific verbs > generalized verbs, e. g. "the accountant took the money"
