The purpose of a literary essay is to help your reader better understand an aspect of a work or works that you have read. An essay is generally broken into three sections: The introductory paragraph must contain the following: Hook: a broad statement of the subject of interest of the reader. This could also be a surprising fact or example. Bridge: 1-2 sentences introducing the work that you will be discussing; connects the hook to the argument sentences. Argument sentences: announce the areas of focus or introduces the three points of discussion in your essay.
