Alter the internal structure of words in one sentence or the relationship between two sentences.
Varies the beat within and between sentences
Intrusive Pattern
Sentence A – Sentence B – Sentence A
Use to give more detail on general observations made in Sentence A
The birthday greeting – Daniela sends it to all her friends – reads “Happy Birthday to my
closest friend.”
End/Beginning
Clause + Repeating Element. Repeating Element + Clause
This structure works with two sentences. The end of one sentence is the start of the next. This
pattern builds coherence.
What you have described is life. Life is tough.
Beginning/Beginning
Repeating Element + Clause. Repeating Element + Clause.
The repeating element is at the beginning of two sentences.
It is a relational repetition. One point clearly leads to the next, emphasizing the writer’s meaning.
Smith’s theory seemed original to himself. Smith’s theory seemed unoriginal to the committee.
 

End/End
Clause + Repeating Element. Clause + Repeating Element.
This pattern repeats words—your choice of how many—from the end of the first
sentence at the end of second.
This is a particularly strong pattern since the repeating element ends the sentences and
the last words stay with the reader.
Before we had money, we worried about money. After we got money, we still worried
about money.
Beginning/End
Repeating Element + Clause + Repeating Element
This structure repeats elements at the beginning and end of one sentence.
This pattern creates a poetic sound and would have only occasional use in academic
writing.
Forever is a long time, and I intend to live forever.
Research Essay
Requires extensive evidence to support a focused thesis.
Key to writing an effective research paper are
- gathering sources that comprehensively address an appropriately focused topic, and
- synthesizing the information to present a strong argument supporting a clear thesis.
