Document Summary

Anta02 week 9 march 12, 2013 race and racism. Due last week of class april 1-4. Race is a recent human invention: within the last 500-600 years. Race is about culture, not biology: culture has given us these categories or race, they are not grounded by any biological fact. Race and racism are embedded in (social) institutions and everyday life: racism is thought of as a bad seed of society, they are embedded in the world around us. How do you determine a person"s race: skin colour, self-definition /identity, origin/where we"re from (geographically, language, behaviours/characteristics, stereotypes. How does race shape your everyday life: socioeconomic status, self-fulfilling prophecy, how people treat/see you. Once we categorize people based on characteristics we get different qualities of people (positive or negative stereotypes) Races, as discrete biological categories, do not exist. However, race is a meaningful social category with very real social consequences.
