Modes of livelihood: population density, levels of political organization, and forms of social organization. Marshall sahlins, richard lee, james woodburn, mark cohen (population density) Lubicon cree/cherokee removal/james bay cree and hydro quebec. Using terms primitive to question it, not agreeing w/ it. In anthropology, when using modern/tradition: tradition = small scale face to face, relying heavily on kinship for family/groups, gender/identity. Modern = lots of social hierarchy, complex states, many affiliations in terms of identity, communities not necessarily face to face. Anthropology perspective: if we"re looking at culture with this sense of mind we"d always have an ethnocentric way of thinking. Moral judgement of what it"s to be human, so if you"re part of a culture that"s deemed to be primitive, you"re basically denied by society to be human. Based on events in "92 made in 1993. Satire b/c until recently, can go and see indigenous people being put on display, brought over for entertainment in museums.
