Thinking about social stratification part 2: class and caste, power and agency. Ideology of inequality rationalized european treatment of other peoples; was turned into race ; science began to back up ideology. Samuel morton craniometry (measuring skull shape and size) and intelligence: a respected scientist/physician that collected and measured skulls since. 1820s: believed a person"s intelligence was related to the size of their brain, larger = more intelligent, since size of brain could be determined from size of skull. Thought a ranking of race could be objectively achieved through ranking skull sizes. In 19th century, scientists had attempted to prove that whites were superior to other race b/c of their skull. The skull of a black person was distorted and unproportioned, giving the impression that they were even lower in rank than apes/young chimpanzees. Stephen jay gould debunked morton"s work (so did franz boas) In social sciences: racialized culture of poverty theory.
