ANTA02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Critical Inquiry, Thick Description, Edward Burnett Tylor
Document Summary
Anthropology: a generous, open-ended, comparative, and yet critical inquiry into the conditions and potentials of human life in the one world we all inhabit. Ethnography (what anthropologists write) is, in turn, is based on fieldwork. Legacies of violence and in search of respect are ethnographies (not novels) Rite of passage for anthropologists -> doing fieldwork. Not one native pov, everyone experience things differently. Goal -> to present readers with a culture that they are not familiar with. Make your readers see the culture through the eyes of the people you studied. Gestures need context to understand from a native"s pov. People can have a lot or less of culture. Civilized people -> seem as having the most civilization. Created ranking of cultural groups around the world. How other people"s civilization looks at compared to the one he found to be the most civilized. Did the same thing as tylor with religion. Said that all human cultures could be divided.
