American body ideals, The Dualist Axis, The Control Axis, The Gender/Power Axis
Crystallization: the way that various cultural logics and values comes together, and sustain each
other, in real embodied form through body ideals, tangible for m, fat bodies is the result of
crystallization of a caste-based society and values(closed and gender complementari t y ), cultural
values are crystallized and they become real, touchable, visible form, cultural values+logic comes
together to become real, everything is crystallized through the body ideal
They come in touchable forms, the womens bodies, they “crystallize” all these different things,
reinforce and sustain each other, fat bodies are viewed as beautiful because they are so closed and
still
Fatness as beauty for Azawagh Arabs, the tyranny of slenderness in North America
Being fat embodies cultural values in Niger
We blame T.V, media, magazines with the obsession of thinness, live in an age of T.V, billboards,
media inf luence; can we say media is a demon?
We rarely quest ion(we understand what were seeing)
Angel i na Jolie crystallizes North American values: mobile, tan/long hair, powerful, athletic,
masculine, independent, scandally clavious, self-confident, lean
Angel i na Jolie embodies the ethic of hard work & restrain
Susan Bordo created the word crystallization, she argued that anorexia nervosa is cultural bound
body behavi or that crystallizes our own body ideals, anorexia and nervosa prevalent through the
last 50 years, crystallizes our cultural logics + values,
Susan Bordo studied why slim bodies are sexy? Popenoe is opposite, why are fat bodies sexy?
The anorexic body is a symbol, symbolic critique of our own body norms; critique is in
somebody’s head, not effective critique, cultural nor ms that the anorexi c body critiques: beautiful,
thin, sexy, feminine bodies, medias problem, why are we obsessed with slimness?
Dualist Axis: WE DONT LIKE BODIES, Mind over matter, body and mind are separate; body
is seen as a confinement, restricts us. Body as the enemy(hol ding us back, in our way, pesky)
getting thinner is control, histor ically and culturally we dont like bodies, our fear of loss of
control, idea of the body not being a part of yourself, body as a limitation, holding the real you,
body is an enemy(wants to eat, minds job is to focus, body undermines hard work intention),
body has desires, thinness represents hard work, mind over matter
