If you want to understand what anthropology is, look at what anthropologists do. Above all else, what anthropologists do is ethnography . Ethnography (what anthropologists write) is, in turn is based on fieldwork. Feeding desire and renegade dreams are ethnographies. Anthropology relies on fieldwork and writes ethnography after fieldwork. Culture from the native point of view (always want to convey native pov, understand that culture from a native"s view) Context for knowledge about culture (without context, will get mixed signals at best) Philosophers and various explorers as proto-anthropologists : barbarians compared to athenians, marco polo wrote many about chinese cultures. Victorian anthropology (tylor and frazer): evolutionary, hierarchy of. Young/newer discipline given in the 20th century but has roots in history, philosophy, travelling. Tyler/frazer are considered armchair anthropology , sat in their chair in their office and wrote their books (anthro from afar), not to make fun of them/say its bad, but no one does it this way anymore.
