Metaphors we live by (lakoff and johnson) Def: an encompassing picture of reality based on a set of shared assumptions about how the works. Multiple worldviews may coexist in a single culture, or a single worldview may dominate. Worldview is one thing that falls under culture. In some cultures, essential to daily life, just as real part of reality, we interact w/ them, they help us make decisions, etc. Drought in area bishop: can pray to gods for rain but remember there are other factors in play , ), education, background, relationship to person they"re talking to. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: there is a systematic relationship between the categories of the language a person speaks and how that person understands the world and behaves in it: shape of language affects shape of reality. In other words, different language patterns yield different patterns of thought. Sapir was a linguist, came up w/ hypothesis. The world in which different society lives are distinct worlds.
