Why or why not: the focus on women in annette weiner"s ethnography makes her work significantly feminist, however, she doesn"t introduce herself as a feminist ethnographer, nor does she claim her work to be of feminist anthropology. Yet, her project is significant in the movement for the way that it pays attention to women"s lives, including their forms of exchange. The subject matter could be considered as feminist, yet she doesn"t talk about herself in those terms. She didn"t want to replicate the attack of derek freeman on margaret mead. She was diplomatic and generous with malinowski: malinowski zeroed in on kula exchange, whereas weiner focuses on something different. The two texts can be seen as complimentary. In other words, weiner"s work enriches malinowski"s work. She doesn"t try to invalidate him: according to malinowski, magic serves a psychological function. When people are concerned about their safety or when they"re doing something risky, they"ll turn to magic.
