ANTC16H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Taphonomy, Lithosphere, Organism
Document Summary
Taphonomy: the study of the process of fossilization. (transition from biosphere. Fossils lose their biological information (skeleton elements, communities they came from, etc) through fossilization. Only 10-15% of any organism is usually fossilized. Some things to consider when thinking about what taphonomic processes are responsible in preserving bones, teeth, etc. Bones and teeth are preserved very well too. These conditions in an aquatic environment help preserve bones, teeth, etc. ~organism was buried in very low oxygenated conditions (anoxic conditions) Preservation potential: things that increase the chances of becoming fossilized. Environmental, biological/biochemical factors in preservation and accumulation of bones. The factors are responsible for 2 things: During movement, the remains will be mixed with unrelated remains. They modify the remains (scattering bones, taking apart bones, modify surfaces of bones). Extremes in weather. (high humidity, very cold, etc. ) Bones like to be buried in dry conditions.
