A ritual is repetitive behaviour in which you transform yourself from one state to another. Embodied acts that carry out the message through doing: symbolic action. Van gennep: rituals are universal structures. Liminality (threshold) ie. university student = not a child, but not a recognized adult either y 3. Aggregation; being brought back into society in new status. Durkheim and the sacred and profane: both elements of our lives, profane: everyday lives; quotidian, daily practices, sacred: sepaparated from the profane eg. medieval men going through maze to get to the sacred space. Communitas: returning home, sense of belonging, sense of peace, collective: structure of feeling, can also be created through shared humiliation. ***secret of rituals is to allow the real of the normal to be interrupted, but allows it to go back to normal: often done through rituals of transgressions. Shamans mediate between spirit world and human world, and are charismatic: men and women can be shamans.
